Let Them Eat Cake

09/02/15

When it comes to wedding cakes, we all know the possibilities are endless. Some might say – “It’s cake- you can’t go wrong no matter what you choose” – but you can. What’s even worse than a bad-looking cake is one that tastes like cardboard. Here are some “sweet” tricks that will help you pick the cake of your dreams!

Let your palette do the picking.
Everyone’s taste is different, but you HAVE to like the way your cake tastes. Schedule private tastings with each company and see if they also offer group tastings (they might do this at their open houses). Though they should have a large selection for you to choose from, remember that they probably will showcase only their most popular items. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you are looking for something different. Most importantly, don’t settle just because it looks pretty. At the end of the day, it’s going to be cut into pieces and put on plates for your guests to enjoy, so make sure they do just that.

Go with someone who thinks outside-of-the-box.
Keep in mind that you aren’t just looking for someone who knows how to bake, but is a true artist. They should be able to take your ideas and turn them into a reality (initial consultations will help you decide if they can see your vision). They should draw sketches, show you examples and offer suggestions to help guide you in your decision process. Seek out someone who enjoys variety and makes sure that each client’s cake is unique to their personality.

Expensive doesn’t always equal good.
Your cake should be as delicious as it is visually appealing, but that doesn’t mean it needs to cost an arm and a leg. Bakeries will sell you on how their cakes look but if they are dry and tasteless, they aren’t worth you spending a dime on. Remember that just because they are expensive, it doesn’t automatically mean that they are going to make your mouth water.
